RADIO & T.V. AUCTION & TRIP OF THE MONTH The two main fundraising
activities of the Rotary Club of Amherst are the annual Radio & T.V.
Auction ($18,000-$20,000) and the Trip of the Month Campaign (approx $40,000).
During the month of February, Rotarians solicit goods and gift certificates,
which are then sold off in a two evening auction that is carried live
by the local radio and Cable T.V stations. From June to the end of September,
Club members sell 550 tickets ($150 each) by which fourteen trips for
two with spending money (value between $2,000 and $3,000) can be won,
as well as cash prizes.
Career Development Committee Activities
Blood Donor Clinics were supported by the Rotary Club of Amherst for many years under the leadership of Rotarian Dr. Tony Lawrence. Recently a decision was made by Canadian Blood Services not to solicit assistance from outside organizations. Our club supports their efforts and encourages the public to continue to donate much needed blood supplies in our area.
The Rotary Club of Amherst is the sponsor for the Program in the larger Amherst area, which includes the areas from Port Howe to River Hebert. LIFELINE is a personal emergency response system connected to a 24 Hour call centre. It is designed to help persons living alone to live independently with a measure of security and safety. Members of the Rotary Club undertake to install and maintain the Lifeline units in the area - which are currently about forty in number. Other activities of the Committee involve meeting some of the recreational needs of seniors by providing an annual "Rotary Fiesta" night, an evening of fun and games put on by members of the Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Amherst offers Scholarships for graduating students who will be attending University or Community College in the next year. The club provides up to $ 8,000 in bursaries each year. Please contact Rotarian Frank Balcom at 661-2540 for further information. |
